TV cabinet update

I had to replace the glass in one of the cabinet doors and I started that process today. When I first made this cabinet I hung the glass with mirror hangers. I wanted to do a rabbet cut so the glass would fit perfectly in the door frame but I didn’t have a router or table saw. I now have a router and today I finally got to put it to use. It was awesome! I thought I would have to get a piloted rabbeting bit. Which at the store cost about $25! But after doing some research and I realized I could use a straight bit and clamp some boards down to run the router against. And it worked! It was so great. I did mess up a bit but that’s ok. I had a replacement glass all ready to cut but as I was taking it out of the packaging it split! So good news, I got to use my router. Bad news, I have to get a new piece of glass and try to cut it perfectly!

Once I do that though, it’ll be onto the next project! Building a backless bench for my Mom and Dad and making a folding work table for my garage workshop! More to come…

loft bed update

So hopefully this is my last post on the loft bed but you never know!

Since I’ve made the loft bed, it has become a bunk bed (sorry no pictures) and now, hopefully finally, a junior loft bed. My daughter did not like being up so high, it was too high and hot for her. As you can see I simply cut the legs, readjusted the cross brace and added curtains so she has a fun area to use under her bed. So far it’s been great! Although I have a feeling it might become a regular bed in the end! 🙂

Loft Bed

This is a loft bed I recently made for my daughter. It was from Loft Bed plans I got from Ana’s website. The bed works great. I used mostly pine or common board but I did put some Hem-Fir in there for strength. The long boards in this bed slide into slots on the head and foot board so you can take it a part pretty easily. To make that process easier I sanded down the ends that went into the slots and I didn’t paint them.

Here are some unfinished pictures of the bed.

I did change it up a bit and put a ladder on the end instead of the side and

added a cross brace in the back to help prevent wobbling.

All Done!

Lego Storage, nesting boxes

My son’s legos are a storage nightmare! I had multiple plastic containers and they were never organized. At one point we tried to sort them but that didn’t stick. So I decided to create boxes that I could just throw them in. No sorting allowed. Although I have to say, I do love sorting. I came up with a plan to have them be nesting boxes so they neatly stack and I put it on wheels! It can easily be moved around the room and when it’s clean up time we just fill up the bins. I was going to make a lid for the top one but I’m not sure if I’ll do that. It’s working out so far!! I put an ipad next to the containers in one picture so you have an idea of the size. Also, if I make this again I will do it with mitered butt joints. It will look a lot nicer that way.

Back to it!!

I can’t believe it is almost May! I am done with the house updates and now we are looking for a new house. I did use my gift cards and decided to get a router. I was planning to use the router to help me with my bed updates but that didn’t work and here’s why…..

I decided to install bed hardware from Rockler on my bed in place of nuts and bolts.

The reason for this was to make the bed a little wider and longer. I thought I would use the router to mortise my hinges into the bed posts and rails. I have never used a router before so I had to figure everything out and then my husband and I tired it. It’s not too hard to use but kind of hard to get a straight line, which is what I needed. A very straight line. So, I knew I would have to either get or make a jig. There was no time for that so I pushed my router aside and grab a chisel! The hinges are only an 1/8 of an inch deep. I chiseled them into the posts easily.

Then I looked at the rails and realized there was no way I could mortise the hinges into those. The rails are 1×10’s. So, I just had to mount the hinges onto the ends of the rails. Yes, I have a gap, which I don’t like but it had to be done. Hopefully the bed won’t collapse! Now I just need to fill in all the old (and some new) holes and paint.

I’m thinking my next project might be a dog house! I’ll keep ya posted! ps. I discovered how much I enjoyed wood carving, now I’m in search of a good wood carving project and a new set to go with it of course! 🙂

January 2016 update…

Just wanted to give an update. I am currently busy fixing and painting our house because we are planning to move this spring. Woodworking will have to be put on hold until I’m done with the house. 😦 I haven’t even had a chance to use my gift card yet! Hopefully I will be back to it very soon.

On the upside I still get to use my new drill fixing things around the house, so that makes me happy! 🙂

Happy Holidays and New Year!

I received two fabulous gifts during the holidays. One is a new workshirt from Ana White’s website! Although, my shirt really should say Coffee, Lip Balm and Lumber, but that doesn’t work as well! 😉

AND, two gift cards so I can buy either a router or nail gun! I’m leaning towards a nail gun since one of my next projects will have drawers and I think it would be helpful. And, it’s just cool!

The holidays were super busy so I didn’t get to the bed fixes yet but I will next week definitely!! Plus, today I had to fix the dog gate that my dog pushed up against a little too hard and it fell and broke. I actually think it broke because of a split in the wood that happened when I was making it. So I replaced the 1×4 and moved the one that split to the end for support and a future third panel. Thanks for the extra work Leo!

Have a safe and Happy New Year! ~m
